HISTORY OF THE PRACTICE
This medical practice was formed by Dr. Harold McClelland shortly after the First World War. Dr. McClelland lived in Glenavy all his life but set up his medical practice in the centre of Lisburn in Bow Street.
There were initially few patients but being situated between Crazy Prices (Now Bow Street Mall) and the Northern Bank, and with the post war building boom the practice expanded rapidly necessitating the formation of a medical partnership with another local doctor, Dr. Gary McCartney.
The relative prosperity of the sixties and the building of the Old Warrren and Hillhall Estates fuelled another increase in Lisburn's population with subsequent growth in the size of the practice resulting in the practice having five partners by the end of that decade - Drs. McClelland, McCartney, Porter, Jefferson and Moore. Dr. Hamill joined the practice as a Registrar, later becoming a partner. It had by then become obvious that the original premises with coal fires, and no lift was becoming unsuitable, and this in combination with the Government drive to health centres resulted in the building of Lisburn Heath Centre which opened in 1978. At its opening it was reported as being the second largest health centre in Europe, and although up to date it drew criticism from patients who were not used to travelling so far to see their doctor.
During this time the first lady partner (Dr. Patricia Curry) was appointed, followed by Dr. Bronagh O'Kane and Dr. Juliet Archbold. Following the national trend there are now more female than male doctors.
Since its formation the practice has changed names - Dr. Porters practice, Dr. Jefferson's practice, Dr. Moore's practice and Dr. Wale's practice and now the the retirement of Dr. Wales, and the must delayed development of a new health centre a new name - The Linenhall medial Practice.
The Linenhall Medical Practice (previously known as the Wales practice) is situated on level 3, Lisburn Health Centre and provides the highest quality healthcare to patients in the area. Parking and Access
The Health Centre is surrounded by one large car park which has LIMITED DISABLED SPACES. The entrances to the Health Centre have wheel chair ramps but internal access from the main stair/left tower is difficult due to the presence of fire doors and we would therefore ask disabled patients to contact the ground floor reception staff.
